Psychiatrist Officer – Mental Health & Psychosocial Support

About the role

The International Rescue Committee seeks a dedicated Psychiatrist Officer to lead mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) services for adults and children affected by conflict and disaster. This role combines clinical care, technical supervision, program development, and coordination across sectors to ensure high‑quality mental health services.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive psychiatric assessments, diagnosis, and treatment for adults and children with moderate to severe mental health conditions.
• Prescribe, monitor, and adjust psychotropic medications in line with IRC, WHO mhGAP, and national guidelines.
• Manage psychiatric emergencies, including suicide risk, acute psychosis, severe mood disorders, and trauma‑related conditions.
• Provide brief, evidence‑based psychological interventions when appropriate.
• Offer clinical supervision and mentorship to medical officers, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and other MHPSS staff.
• Support task‑sharing approaches and implement WHO mhGAP guidelines.
• Deliver on‑the‑job coaching and capacity‑building trainings for health staff and partners.
• Participate in multidisciplinary case discussions and clinical review meetings.
• Support design, implementation, and continuous improvement of MHPSS activities, integrating services into primary health care and community programs.
• Develop and adapt clinical tools, SOPs, and referral pathways; monitor service quality and recommend corrective actions.
• Ensure accurate, timely, and confidential documentation of clinical activities and contribute to data collection, analysis, and reporting.
• Coordinate with IRC sectors (Protection, GBV, Child Protection, Health) and engage in inter‑agency coordination forums and technical working groups.
• Provide technical input for community awareness, psycho‑education, and stigma‑reduction activities.
