Data Engineering Team Leader

About the role

Zain Sudan is looking for a Data Engineering Team Leader in its Big Data and Analytics department, reporting to the Big Data Manager. The role is accountable for the technology selection, proof of concept execution, design, development, release and operation of the data platform and data warehousing solutions that support the company's business intelligence and decision-making.

Key responsibilities

• Translate stakeholder needs into data system requirements and designs, and identify opportunities for new technology.
• Build real-time and batch data processing systems and propose new ETL/ELT technologies.
• Set the vision and strategic direction for the data engineering practice and data warehouse.
• Run technology proofs of concept and build the operational knowledge base.
• Work with BI/Analytics teams to improve platform features and design data marts and models.
• Manage, motivate and develop the Data Engineering team, including performance reviews and mentoring.
• Coordinate with internal and external auditors and follow up on their recommendations.
• Maintain documentation of data models, processes, workflows and configuration changes.
• Lead upgrades of data platform components and service releases.
• Manage relationships with external contractors, suppliers and partners.
• Focus on physical data modelling, metadata, data pipeline architecture, optimisation and recovery strategy.
• Ensure compliance with information security policies and other regulatory requirements.

Required profile

• B.Sc. in Computer/Telecommunication Engineering, IT, Computer Science or a related discipline.
• At least 3 years of experience in telecom enterprise data engineering and platforms.
• In-depth knowledge of Big Data systems.
• Previous management or leadership experience preferred; mobile telecommunications background desirable.

Required skills

• Project management and vendor management.
• Communication and reporting in Arabic and English.
• Use of IT packages such as Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
• Ability to teach others in 1-to-1 and group settings.
