Referral Nurse

About the role

The Referral Nurse provides rapid clinical assessment, triage and emergency care for patients in pre‑hospital settings. Working within the International Rescue Committee’s emergency medical services, the nurse ensures safe transport, compassionate support, and seamless handover to receiving health facilities.

Key responsibilities

• Perform rapid patient assessment, triage, and stabilization at the scene and during transport.
• Deliver emergency nursing interventions such as airway management, oxygen therapy, IV access, medication administration, wound care, and cardiac monitoring.
• Assist with Advanced Life Support (ALS) procedures within scope of practice.
• Respond promptly to emergency calls and collaborate with paramedics, drivers, physicians, and other responders.
• Assist with patient extrication, transfer, and ensure accurate handover documentation.
• Document assessments, interventions, and outcomes on patient care reports and communicate status to receiving facilities.
• Check, stock, and maintain ambulance equipment, medications, and supplies; uphold infection prevention and control standards.
• Follow ambulance safety and emergency driving protocols.
• Adhere to clinical guidelines, participate in drills, training, and quality‑improvement initiatives.

Required profile

• Diploma or bachelor’s degree in nursing from an accredited institution.
• Valid nursing license/registration with the relevant regulatory body.
• Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS); Advanced Life Support (ALS/ACLS) preferred.
• Minimum 1–2 years of experience in emergency, critical care, or acute‑care nursing.
• Pre‑hospital or ambulance experience is an advantage.
