Lead Mechanical Engineer – Infrastructure Projects

About the role

UNOPS Sudan is seeking a Lead Mechanical Engineer to drive the design, procurement and implementation of mechanical systems for water and health infrastructure projects across the country. The role offers the chance to shape critical services that improve community resilience and living standards.

Key responsibilities

• Manage mechanical engineering aspects of infrastructure projects, ensuring compliance with international standards and best practices.
• Provide authoritative advice on design, installation and maintenance of water pumps, HVAC systems and medical equipment.
• Adapt engineering policies and approaches to local conditions and resource constraints.
• Supervise and mentor a team of mechanical engineers and technicians.
• Solve complex technical problems and oversee equipment procurement, system design and maintenance planning.
• Interact with clients and stakeholders to maintain strong relationships and ensure reliable service delivery.
• Lead the design and specification of mechanical systems for water and health projects, overseeing installation and commissioning.

Required profile

• Proven experience leading mechanical engineering projects in infrastructure or humanitarian contexts.
• Strong knowledge of international standards for mechanical systems.
• Demonstrated ability to supervise and mentor technical staff.
• Excellent problem‑solving skills and capacity to adapt solutions to challenging environments.
