Air Operations Assistant – UNISFA Aviation Unit

About the role

The United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) is seeking an Air Operations Assistant to support its Aviation Unit in Abyei. The role ensures safe and efficient coordination of aircraft movements, passenger and cargo handling, and emergency response in line with UN aviation standards.

Key responsibilities

• Coordinate routine passenger, cargo, VIP, CASEVAC and MEDEVAC flights.
• Assist with flight following and integrated search-and-rescue operations using UN air assets.
• Obtain diplomatic overflight and landing clearances and arrange ground handling services.
• Plan aircraft parking, apron utilisation and monitor refuelling and fuel uploads.
• Operate Airport Mechanical Handling Equipment (MHE) when authorised.
• Review weight-and-balance records, load plans and cargo manifests, initiating follow-up actions.
• Verify passenger and cargo manifests and ensure compliance with procedures.
• Monitor ramp access, enforce airside safety and security requirements.
• Conduct inspections of ramps, aprons, helipads and fuel facilities to identify safety hazards.
• Participate in emergency response activities, including aircraft incidents, fuel spills and medical emergencies.

Required profile

• Ability to work in a multicultural UN environment and follow established aviation procedures.
• Strong attention to detail for documentation and safety checks.
• Willingness to work on shifts and respond to emergency situations.

Required skills

• Airport Mechanical Handling Equipment (MHE) operation.
• Knowledge of aviation safety procedures and weight-and-balance calculations.
